Henna – Natural Hair Coloring Herb

It is difficult to color hair using chemical products as they cause skin problems in some people. Popularly known herb henna which is also known as Mehandi is used for natural hair coloring mixed with some other herbs. This herb helps to prevent dandruff and scalp itching. It is also a good conditioner for hair. Henna naturally colors the hair; it’s made from the powdered leaves of the desert shrub plant Lawsonia.
Henna comes in a variety of colors including black, mahogany, various shades of brown, red, burgundy, and marigold blonde. In addition to adding color, Henna will coat hair, seal in oils, and tighten the hair cuticle to give hair a rich and healthy shine. If your natural hair color is dark brown or lighter (including grey), you are likely to see a color change after your first henna application. The color should be subtle, but it will increase in intensity after every treatment. Henna’s effects will last up to 3 months. You can also use herbs to encourage natural highlights, see the list below for more information.
Although henna comes in many blends that produce different colors, you cannot be completely certain that it will produce the color you want. Always test the product on an inconspicuous strand of hair before applying henna to your entire head. If you have recently colored your hair using conventional dyes, wait for the chemical color to wash out entirely before applying henna.

Pure henna leaf powder can only produce a red to orange-red color. Different crops (depending on location) produce different levels of red, ranging from auburn to cherry. If you see henna advertised as producing black or brown shades that means the henna has been mixed with some other herb or product. For example, henna is commonly mixed with cocoa powder to produce reddish brown.
